Internet marketing, also referred to as e-marketing or i-marketing, is fast becoming the way of the future. But as with any form of marketing, which essentially brings business in, there are certain things to avoid when formulating and subsequently implementing the strategy. Here are 10 words to avoid when internet marketing.

1.    Free
It is widely agreed that one of the biggest words to avoid in i-marketing is ‘free’. First off, this is a cliché, among other things. People are well aware nothing comes for free, and by mere virtue of the fact that they are connected to the internet, they are already paying. It is a deceptive word.

2.    Cheap
The word ‘cheap’ tends to imply unsavoury connotations, such as shoddy, or poor quality or inferior. Replace with words like ‘cost-effective’ or ‘economical’. Even ‘low-priced’ is better.

3.    Nice
This has got to be one of the most boring words in the English dictionary. Saying ‘nice’ does not necessarily imply that it is nice. Rather use more colourful words to describe what it is you are trying to illustrate, there are so many out there.

4.    Buy
Using words like ‘invest’ is so much better than ‘buy’. The word ‘buy’ implies an exchange of money for goods or services just fine, but if replaced with the word ‘invest’, the reader will get the idea that they will also get a little something more in return.

5.    Say
The word ‘say’ is fine as words go, but using words like ‘reveal’ is slightly more alluring. You want to draw the reader in, so use more vivid words.

6.    Advise
Using the word ‘advise’ can be perceived as a bit degrading. Yes, to marker a product you may know more about it, but buyers’ pride won’t allow for a positive reaction at the word advise. ‘Recommend’ is so much better.

7.    ‘we’, ‘us’, ‘I’
Avoid speaking in the first person. In fact, it is suggested one speaks in the third person, to reduce familiarity and entice the reader a little bit more.

8.    Very
Also one of the most boring words there are. If using adverbs is what you need, rather add to the word. If you are talking about how fast your product or service is, instead of ‘very fast’, try ‘rapidly’ or ‘swiftly’.

9.    Guarantee
Can you really promise what you are trying to convey, beyond shadow of any doubt? If not, avoid the word guarantee, lest you truly mean it.

10. Risk-free
again, unless you can say with absolute certitude that what you are offering is in fact ‘risk-free’ avoid using the phrase. This can be replaced by ‘low-risk’ and won’t have negative consequences should it prove false.

The trick with i-marketing is to make use of more beautiful, but preferably simpler words. Instead of saying ‘commence’, one should simply say ‘begin’ or ‘start’. Additionally, use words that sound like what they mean, words that offer a visual as your potential customers read them. This will all lead to an ideal i-marketing campaign.
